This Veldskoen-style lace-up shoe (commonly known as a “Vellie”) combines the classic South African safari aesthetic with a modern, smooth-finish synthetic leather. This particular pair features a rich tan color, reinforced contrast stitching for durability, and matching woven laces for a cohesive, rustic look.
Because these are made from synthetic leather (PU Leather), they require different care to keep them looking fresh.
Care Instructions for Synthetic Leather
Since synthetic leather is non-porous, it doesn’t absorb oils or water the way real leather does. Follow these steps to maintain them:
- Daily Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away dust and light dirt after each wear. Because the surface is smooth, most stains will wipe off easily without needing heavy scrubbing.
- Deep Cleaning: If they get muddy, use a mixture of mild dish soap and lukewarm water. Dip a soft sponge or cloth into the soapy water, wring it out well, and gently wipe the exterior. Wipe again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
- Drying: Always air-dry your shoes away from direct heat sources (like heaters) or harsh sunlight, as extreme heat can cause synthetic leather to crack or peel over time.
- Scuff Removal: For stubborn scuff marks, a small amount of non-gel toothpaste or a dedicated “magic eraser” sponge can be used gently on the affected area.
- What to Avoid:
- Do Not use traditional leather oils, waxes, or “Dubbin,” as these are designed to soak into natural fibers and will simply sit on top of synthetic leather, creating a sticky mess.
- Do Not machine wash or submerge them fully in water, as this can weaken the adhesives holding the sole together.
